At just 10 years old, McKenzie Muskett is already making waves in Tasmanian swimming, and in 2026, he’s aiming to do so on one of the State’s most iconic stages.

Known for his powerful freestyle, smooth technique, and fierce determination in the pool, McKenzie approaches training with a focus well beyond his years. Currently training seven to eight sessions each week in the water, and supported by land-based training, McKenzie continues to push himself to improve both his technique and race times.

What sets McKenzie apart isn’t just his physical ability, but his work ethic and mindset. He brings a strong team spirit to every session and has a genuine love for the water—qualities that are helping him develop rapidly as a junior athlete and marking him as one of Tasmania’s emerging swimming talents.

That dedication is already producing results. McKenzie has recently represented Tasmania in Ballarat at the School Games and has begun branching into triathlon competition, where he placed an impressive 4th at the All-Schools Triathlon Championships—an outstanding result for an athlete new to the sport.

Now, McKenzie has set his sights on an ambitious and historic goal: to be the youngest person to compete in—and complete—the Trans Derwent Swim, to be held as part of the 187th Royal Hobart Regatta in 2026.

The Trans Derwent Swim has long been one of the Regatta’s most celebrated events, embodying endurance, resilience, and the unique connection between athletes and Hobart’s iconic waterfront. McKenzie’s goal speaks to the spirit of the event and the Regatta itself—challenging individuals of all ages to test themselves in a setting steeped in tradition.

Entries for the 2026 Trans Derwent Swim have just opened, and McKenzie’s journey serves as a timely reminder of what the event represents: personal challenge, community participation, and the continuation of a proud Regatta legacy that has endured for nearly two centuries.

As preparations begin for the 187th Royal Hobart Regatta, stories like McKenzie’s highlight why the Trans Derwent Swim remains such a special part of the program—and why the Regatta continues to inspire generations of Tasmanians to get involved.
